Tips for Drilling with an 18 Inch Drill Bit

• Start with a pilot hole. Start with a short bit, then follow with the long one so it can’t walk or wander at the surface.
• Keep the speed low. A long bit spinning fast out of the hole will whip and bend. Start the bit in the hole before you bring up the speed.
• Back out often. Clear chips every inch or so in deep holes, and use cutting fluid in steel.
• Stay straight. Steady, even pressure in line with the bit. Side load is what bends a long drill.
